We take ratings from all over the internet, weigh & average out the numbers fairly, sprinkle some magic dust on it for clarity and voilà, each entity accumulates their own value/score for ranking purposes. From IMDb and Letterboxd to MUBI and TSPDT?, we leave no stone unturned in our quest to provide you with the finest entertainment recommendations. Exploring the world of cinema can be both thrilling and daunting, much like trying to explain our scoring process. Our algorithm employs a three-tier system (sorta) to determine the placement of films on our lists.
Picture it like a three-tiered upside-down triangle, where each tier represents a layer of evaluation, with Tier 1 holding the most weight:
Tier 1: Mainstream Aggregators
These are the heavy hitters like IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and Letterboxd. These widely recognized platforms provide a solid foundation for our rankings, reflecting the pulse of both critics and audiences.
Tier 2: Niche Platforms
Think of this tier as the hidden gems of film critique—platforms like MUBI, RYM.com, Flickchart, and Film Affinity. They bring unique perspectives and cater to specific film interests, adding depth to our assessments.
Tier 3: Weighted Systems and Boosters
Here’s where the true magic happens. We sprinkle in additional factors like our WorldMeter (which aggregates ratings from various international sources like Kinopoisk, Douban, Allociné, Filmweb & CSFD).
Other factors such as Popularity, Likeability (watched/liked ratio, 7-10/10 ratings etc.) and Lovability (9-10/10 ratings, Letterboxd Fans etc.).
And finally, we take Critics’ & Directors consensus from reputable sources like TSPDT?, Sight & Sound, SensCritque & La Cinetek to further refine our assessment.
Just so you know, when we roll up to these websites, we aren’t just taking the standard “8.2/10” or “72% fresh” ratings. We are taking EVERYTHING. Any piece of data that may indicate what someones opinion on a film is. No matter how small, or how ‘insignificant’. Every voice is heard here.
Each rating (throughout the entire system) is carefully weighted against the number of votes received, ensuring that films with higher engagement are appropriately measured. Additionally, scores are balanced against each other to prevent any single website or metric from dominating the rankings, ensuring balance and accuracy in our lists.
